RE:Alexei Hospitalized in Krasnodar - Appendix Operation!!
(Date Posted:08/03/2008 11:28:51)
Just read this on another site (sorry, I do occasionally dip into others!!).
Oh My, I do hope he is OK and takes the time to recover. Although top athletes are very fit this can almost work against them because to do their job they have to be in peak conditioning. I would image most figure skating moves - jumps, spins, twists and turns - would create problems for someone with a healing surgical wound in their abdomen.
Maybe this has been the cause of his pain. He'll be nothing but scar tissue around there if he isn't careful.
I hope he takes a little time, goes home and rests. I'm not a betting person, but I can see him trying to return almost immediately. I hope the tour has doctors on hand that refuse to let him back. I know this may seem harsh but it would be for the good in the long term.
He's strong and determined so I'm sure he'll bounce back and be back enjoying himself and delighting us all soon.

WOW!!!! Well, this is certainly a stunner! I've been out of the loop for the last 24 hours due to blizzard conditions in my area of the US, and so haven't been online at all. Appendix surgery will certainly slow him down some. I'm just glad that the tour was in an area which had the facilities to handle that kind of surgical procedure; there are probably areas in outlying parts of Russia that would be hard pressed to have the proper facilities. Hopefully he will follow the doctors' orders and not think that he can get out on the ice to do anything, let alone jumps. Let me amend that, lol, I hope and pray he follows doctors' orders, LOL. Again? I have to admit, I wanted him to skate and compete again although he fell in Germany but he won't for sure... Can't wait for YouTube video. Heard he would stay in hospital for weeks.

I hope they performed an appendectomy prior to the appendix bursting. The amount of time required for convalescence should depend upon that. One can recover very quickly if the appendicitis is caught in a sufficiently early stage, as mine was. The news was startling, but with good medical care, he should be fine before long. Let's pray for that.

The news is now posted at both FSU and Goldenskate, as well as at AYDG.
Andrushka put a thread at FSU, and I started one at Goldenskate just now. I wish I had thought to check the "News" icon, but I was scarcely aware of the option when I was making the thread. I hope we get more news soon, about whether his appendix had burst prior to the surgery, and what his condition is now. When an appendix bursts, it can lead to infection of the peritoneal cavity, and that can be quite serious, so, please keep on praying for him, guys.

I'm trying to obtain any information available other than the original interfax article but there does not seem to be anything further from Russian news sources. In most cases online news does not get posted during the weekends. The Russian bulletin boards have a few people who attended the March 7th show in Krasnodar and it appears that after Alexei performed Overcome and an encore performance of Winter he was taken to the hospital directly thereafter. During the March 8th show, still in Krasnodar, Ilya told the audience what had happened and after astonished gasps from the crowd everyone began to clap in support of Alexei...... Karenna

Until we can get confirmation on whether or not Alexei's appendix burst, I think we should assume that it didn't and the surgery went well with everything being under control. I did research on what medical facilites are available in Krasnodar and discovered that there is a huge regional medical center based there for the entire area. Sochi is not far from there, as well. The city, itself, has a population of 800,000, (it's the 18th largest city in Russia) and from that I would think any large hospital would be well staffed with highly competent doctors. Given that information, I think he'd in the best hands, comparable to Moscow.
What we must hope is that some kind-hearted soul ties him to his hospital bed to prevent him from even thinking about returning to the ice before he's completely healed in 6 weeks or so, LOL.

Only Alexei could skate with appendicitis. I'm astonished that he could do it, but I don't know why. He's done similar things. The man is a machine. I'm so sorry. I agree, someone will have to glue him to the mattress to keep him from performing. I'm hoping the very best for him. Virago

Thanks, Karenna. I could not find anything newer than that. It is so like Alexei to be performing with a hot appendix. He had to be in pain, but I guess he's so used to being in pain, he just kept going. The AYDG mentioned that he was taken by ambulance to the hospital during the intermission on March 7, after he had performed. What a guy! I can imagine how worried Ilya Averbukh must have been. This is why I am so eager to find the news of whether Alexei's appendix had burst or not.

RE:Alexei Hospitalized in Krasnodar - Appendix Operation!!
(Date Posted:10/03/2008 10:04:26)
Posted an hour ago on the KP.RU site. Apparantly is was done via laparoscopy ('key-hole') which is the typical way of carrying out the procedure. Done at midnight and lasted an hour. No complications. Apparantly the hospital is not really geared up for 'celebrity guests' so he's in a side room but they don't have suites and the nurses have been telling people he has already left to stop inquisitive fans trying to disturb him. As we suspected the doctors have told him to bed-rest for a month but he is saying as soon as he feels better he'll rejoin the tour. I almost find myself hoping that he doesn't make a quick recovery, otherwise he'll be back on the ice in a week or 2 without getting the rest he needs. http://www.kp.ru/daily/24060/303913/translation uploaded to swoopshare: http://en.swoopshare.com/file/a5ccd5fe9047aec559e9134138eeed5d/Alexei+Yagudin+zagremel+in+Krasnodar+in+hospital.doc.htmlSharon

Just posted on izvestia.ru site (about 45mins ago) - with quotes from Alexei's agent. Looks like Alexei is out of hospital and in Moscow. I didn't think he would need to be in long. Hope his honey looks after him well. Nothing new from previous posts on the operation but looks like the 1 month rest is now 7-10 days! I don't know if that is Alexei talking though or the doctors!!
However, the laparoscopy recovery is much faster than the older method.

"I especially want to note effectiveness and professionalism of local doctors, - speaks Dmitriy goryachkin. - Already today Leshu they must extract, and it will arrive flying to Moscow. Physicians consider that the operation must not derive it from the system for a long time. Seven-ten days it must find in the state of rest, and then it will be able to renew trainings ".
