I can hardly wait to get my little hands on this book! (And I have some promising news about the publishing of Alexei's book in English....the publisher is very, very interested!)

This was posted yesterday at kp but it is excerpts from Alexei's book and his disclosure of past relationships -

http://www.kp.ru/daily/24010.3/84762

I found the disclosure about his relationship with Kyoko Ina enlightening and yet a little sad - I guess it's because I come from good Russian "peasant" heritage as well.  My idea of heaven is a modest dacha with an antenna wire for tv reception! And hay smells nice! My father's bed was made of hay and he grew up just fine.  And please don't forget my garden to grow tomatoes and cucumbers!

Thanks, Karenna, for posting the link to this 'teaser' excerpt from Alexei's book, Russian edition. I had a good laugh thinking about Kyoko having a snit fit over the mattress and pillows stuffed with hay, LOL. The culture shock for her would most probably have been total, LOL. I would rather unroll my sleeping bag on a hay mattress than sleep on the floor any day! From the sounds of it the Yagudin dacha is fairly primitive and for someone such as Kyoko, who has grown up with all the comforts of an American home, that whole experience would have been over-the-top in a negative way.

I've read a lot of comments from various people who have either read that article or seen a translation of it, and many are appalled that Alexei would reveal this sort of information, at all. For myself, I'm sitting on the fence with this, LOL. I can see the positives and negatives for both sides of the issue. How would a Russian person feel about someone, with whom they had a very personal relationship, revealing any details about it much later after that relationship was over? Do they simply chalk it up to fate or is there unspoken animosity there?

Hi Mary!!!!

So nice to see that you here! I apologize that the board still has gliches but everyday seems to be more promising than the last.

It is interesting to read the differences in background between Kyoko and Alexei.  In my own experience I have encountered those from more affluent backgrounds who were part of an urban environment - the expressions of astonishment when they visited country homes/farm homes was evident.  I guess I feel a little indignant towards this attitude and that's why I stubbornly refuse advice to tear down and rebuild an elaborate summer home- small and cozy with an old yet polished samovar in the corner is my choice.  I can only imagine that Alexei may have felt slightly embarrased by this situation - I know I did at first until I realized I can only feel embarrased if I choose this emotion.  So now - I choose to feel proud!

Alexei will be attending a press conference on December 5th at 12:00 in the Media office of Izvestia as a pre-launch to his book.  The theme - "Alexei Yagudin shocks his worshippers by frankness!"

RE:Alexei's Book -

From today's press conference in the media offices of Izvestia Alexei has given an interview - He states, with a heavy heart, that it is not possible for him to return to elgible competition.  This has been decided since he had experienced a significant physical problem at the show in Dusseldorf, Germany recently -

http://www.rian.ru/sport/sportsman/20071205/90982715.html

Alexei says the new joint is very much intact but it is the surrounding structures that are problematic.

Karenna

In my heart I know that this is the best decision for him to make but I can't help feeling incredibly sad.  I prayed that everything would be exactly as he had hoped.

Karenna....Thanks for the link to the article.

Whoa! Well, I can't say that I'm surprised at all. I saw this day coming back when he had the hip replacement surgery. In that article he states that he had the hip replacement when he did because he wanted to return to eligible competition. I still don't understand why, after he researched what the limitations were on the hip replacement and talked to the doctors whom I'm sure would have explained to him that there are other physical factors to consider, he still thought that eligible competition was possible. If he wasn't such an incredibly smart guy, perhaps it would have made sense that he could have overlooked or not understood those other aspects, but that's not the case; he's extremely intelligent. I guess I'll never know the answer to that one, LOL.

In any case, this is a sad day. What I hope is that he'll back off on pushing the physical envelope somewhat so as to preserve whatever remains of his ability to do show skating because it will be an even sadder day when he hangs up those silver blades for good.

RE:Alexei's Book -
(Date Posted:05/12/2007 15:29:54)

I was so saddened by the news, earlier today, that I could not reply.  I know how much Alexei wanted to compete again at the highest level, and I believe that, with CoP-friendly choreography, he could indeed have won.  His discipline is as amazing as his talent.

We never know what lies ahead for us; I hope and believe that good things lie ahead for Alexei.  He is a performer of infinite charm, and on, or off the ice, he has the ability to please an audience; of this I am certain.  I also believe that he is part of the movement in Russia to raise a new generation of Russian figure skaters.  There are many ways to contribute to that movement.  Ilya's tour with its Master Classes, both inspires and teaches the young, and the show, "Ice Age" itself, surely makes many young people think "I want to do that when I grow up!".

Years ago, I posted again and again, in various places, that "there is only one Alexei Yagudin".  I also posted that "we shall not soon see his like again".  As I peruse the careers of some other male skating champions, I see no one else with that combination, from an early age, of precision, power, refusal to fall, charm, and ability to control their nerves under immense pressure.  For me, Alexei will always be THE unforgettable champion of men's single skating in my lifetime.  There are other male skaters whose performances I enjoy, but no one will ever take his place in my heart.

I love his show skating also, because I love the way his feet move lol.  I always did.  They seem, his feet, to "know" the ice, intimately.  He moves as naturally on the ice, as a fish does in water.  I love many other things about his show skating, as well, as I think all of us here do.  For as long as he performs, on the ice, or off it, I shall look forward to watching him, online, on TV, anywhere.

I feel exactly the same...such sadness.  I held back the tears after I read the article and then the floodgates opened when I sat in my car this morning.  It is the right decision - I am convinced of this.  I would rather see Alexei without pain regardless how much I wish he could have continued in eligible competition.  "For as long as he performs, on the ice, or off it, I shall look forward to watching him, online, on TV, anywhere."  Always.

RE:Alexei's Book -
(Date Posted:06/12/2007 00:35:25)

Another interview with Alexei during the Izvestia press conference and the introduction of Alexei's new book-

http://www.rg.ru/2007/12/06/yagudin.html

The article describes Alexei's book from it's initial colaboration between Alexei and Lynda Prouse, the publishing of the first edition in Japan and the reworking of the original text for a Russian audience.  The article goes on to say that Alexei is now occupied by a tv series and  has partnered with Viktoria Dayneko (his partner on "Ice Age") in the creation of a new song and of course does not leave training.  "I can't say that I am succesful at everything, but I try" says Alexei. "I am pleased that a creative career is developing for me now. Although I sleep only 5 or 6 hours in a 24 hour period, I am still very glad that everything occurs precisely this way. In the last two months I have been introduced to an enormous quantity of new and interesting people."  Alexei goes on to say "The recent operation on my hip joint was completed exactly in order so that I may return to eligible competition but three weeks ago in Germany I was carried out from the arena and could not finish my number.  Apparently, the remaining joint is so worn that the probability to come out amongst the amateurs is negligible."  Alexei gives assurances that his personal life is "on the rise" and describes Vika as a very able-bodied person who extends enormous effort for the realization of stated goals but there is nothing between them other than as partners on the ice.  Alexei says he greatly respects Vika and his only wish is that she eats a little less before a performance.

After reading this interview I suddenly feel very hopeful for Alexei.  He is truly multi-dimensional.  There is just so much for him to do and experience and I am happy that he has so much untapped talent and interest in other areas of life.  He sounds so positive in this article that I can't help feeling excited for him.  And......even though it was initially hard to accept there is a large part of me which is relieved by his decision not to pursue eligible competition......

I can't help but laugh at Babel Fish...  Ice Age is translated "Glacial Period"

I'm so sad that there will be no return to eligible skating, even though I knew it was such a long shot.  I didn't even believe it at first - I thought it must surely be a rumor...  It's best that he is not in pain.  I'm glad for that.  I agree, it's the right choice.  Darn it, though!

Hi Karenna! (and everyone else too!) it has been a while since I have posted - boy life sure gets busy sometimes - for all of us as well as for Alexei!

He's been a busy guy with the book signing and the Ice Age and the tour coming up and he certainly has been no slouch with the ladies and all these fashion and music and awards shows! When does this fellow sleep?

I have a friend who is going to send a copy of the book to me - not that I can read Russian myself - but I happen to have a friend here that can!  So I am hoping to receive a copy very soon! As for the revelations about Kyoko and her shock at the living conditions, I am surprised. I will have to read that excerpt more closely before posting anything else.

I can't wait also to see the new photos (additions since the Japanese publication) - the one posted by K. Bangs is very nice - I think that was probably from a few summers ago - he looks so tanned.  Right now in winter I need to go somewhere and get one of those!

I think Alexei made the right decision not to push himself back to eligible competition.  He knows his physical situation best. And those who enjoy his skating want him to be healthy and happy - he certainly deserves it! And we love to see him on ice anytime!

This is great - sitting at my computer once again with my favorite "podstakanik" (umm...a metal holder for a glass) and Russian tea.....and catching up on the news about Alexei.....

You may have read this already on another board but this article discusses excerpts from Alexei's book and Plushenko's book.  I've read the first few chapters of Alexei's book and I am very impressed.  Linda Prouse was part of the writing process but I believe Alexei's thoughts and manner of expression are very much front and center in the compilation.  I also had a chance to look at Plushenko's book. Now how can I put this delicately?                      Alexei's book = Interesting, Intelligent, Funny.        Plushenko's book = The dog ate it.

Ooops.....the article....

http://www.metro-russia.com/news/rubrics/peterburg/plyuwenko_i_yagudin_napisali_drug_o_druge/

Karenna

I'm sorry if I sound really negative about Plushenko's book but after a few chapters it gets a bit redundant.  Truly, how many times can a person read that Plushenko simply can't understand why he fell in the short program at the 2002 Olympics - "To this day I don't know why I fell." I'm sure there are many reasons - Ziagonov, gravity or perhaps a veriniki from lunch shifted too far to the right.

I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase both Alexei's new book an Overcome on Ebay. OK, they were a little pricey but I thought it was worth it and probably the only way I would be able to get hold of them.

Well, they arrived today. Yippee.  Some photo's I hadn't seen before in the Japanese book and lots in the Russian version.

My scanner is playing up or I would have uploaded some.  I'll try to get it working over the weekend.

The only slight disappointment ladies is that the picture in the book that corresponds to the one on Katherine's site shows a bit more from the waist down: unfortunatley he has jeans on!!!teehee!!

I managed to sort out the scanner problem and have uploaded some of the new pictures from Alexei's book.  Also, included 2 from Overcome which were just too aaaahhhhh not to.  He looks great with a baby in his arms.

I love the one with the little girl on his sholders as well.

We'll all be getting broody if he does many more 'with children' poses.

He looks better than male models in these so get ready with the smelling salts..you may need to be revived!

Would anyone be kind-hearted and generous enough to translate the article/extract from his book posted (about past relationships) into English?

It's very interesting reading your comments about it, but for those of us who unfortunately don't (yet!) speak Russian, we'd love to know what it says and get the full picture of what you're referring to.

Thanks a lot in advance!
