Between June 19th and the 22nd celebrities will participate in a "Moscow Festival of the Yachts" in which they will compete to win a 2008 Jaguar Land Rover. The stars are lining up! (pardon the pun) - Alexei would be perfect as the owner of a new Land Rover! (Again found by Ola @GOI!)

Sounds like fun! What sort of competition is it, Karenna? A race of some sort? Power boats or sailboats? Where in Moscow would something like that be held? If it's on a river in a sailboat, tacking back and forth across it would be brutal, LOL. I've done that and in windy conditions it is so NOT fun, LOL. Give me miles of lake surface any day, LOL.

Ooh so Alexei has gone for a Land Rover. As a Brit I have to say, good choice Alexei, although it is not a band I would have thought he's go for.  MInd you, it is very good quality and an SUV (apart from Jeep, the oldest SUV around).

I think Alexei looks so cute in his outfit..blue really does suit him, especially this vibrant shade.  Love the red shoes too.  I seem to recall an article in which he described going over to Peterhof I think it was, by boat, with some of the SOI guys.  It was a bit rough and the boat basic.  I don't think they did too well which seemed to amuse Alexei!!Laughing so I think he must be a good sailor.

He looks like he's having a good time out on the water. The Jaguar Land Rover, thats different than the regular Land Rover isn't it?Because the normal is made by a British car company if my memory is right.

Andrea, they are one and the same.

Land Rover where taken over by Jaguar (both Biritsh owned and built).  Then Jaguar were bought out by Ford but both cars are still made in GB.  I think Ford have not long sold/part sold one or both brands to another company.  Both brands are high end.  I like Jags, espcially the sports cars.

If you are a Bond films fan, the green car the 'baddie' used in Die Another Day was a Jag.

a bit more on the regatta..and a very nice photo of Alexei. Click on the small image to get a larger one.

Apparantly Alexei's celebrity partner had to go off somewhere and Alexei was left on his own. If only we had known, we'd have jumped in to help him out laugh.gif I'm sure he would give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if we fell in the water love0071.gif

.........................................
At the start of distinguished and Alexei Yagudin, who in the absence of Rita Mitrofanovoy, escaped with training on live, had to try for two. But the Olympic champion for nothing is impossible - Alexei clearly served the team captain and periodically tried to pull themselves for cables and other elements of rigging the ship.

Sharon....Thanks for posting this photo of Alexei. Wow! How I'd love to find him with that expression standing on the dock as I manuevered my sloop into the slip. Yes!!!

But I don't think I could stand to have him on board with me--I'd forget everything I know and would sit there like a blabbering idiot, making no sense whatever, nor recalling the differences between a sheet and a jenny. Tongue out LOL

LOL, It's all sailing jargon! Translation: a  sheet is a line/rope attached to a sail; a jenny is a shortened term for a genoa, a type of cruising sail for use in light winds. The meaning, there, is I'd be so overcome by his smile, those eyes, and his presence that I'd forget all of the things that are second nature to me, LOL.

I haven't been typing much - believe it or not my wrists and hands are sore from supporting myself on the crutches - and to think not long ago I was actually proud to have a small bone structure - not anymore! I just have to say "Raise the mizzen mast, avast ye landlubbers, keelhaul the poopdeck!"  Did I get this right???

And that picture of Alexei......sort of makes you want to say "Hey sailor!"

Thanks for the beautiful photo, Sharon.

I always love the way Alexei looks in blue.  When I saw the photo of Alexei on another thread in a light aqua tee shirt, I did not say anything because it felt wrong for me to say what I was thinking, because his car and medal had been stolen, but the truth is that I smiled when I saw him in that tee shirt, because that is the color that had become my favorite for myself to wear, so it was very pleasant to see him wearing it.

It's too bad his sailing partner was not on board to help, but I think he will like sailing.  There is nothing else quite like it.  You ride the wind, and knife through the water, and there is a peace to it that is utterly satisfying.  It is as if you become one with nature.

Dear Karenna, this too shall pass. *HUG*

Mary at least you know the lingo...I'd be a babbling idiot without any insider knowledge.  I noticed in all the pictures the participants had the nice blue jackets on but no life-jackets.  I don't think safety regulations are very strict in Russia or perhaps they just took them off for the photo's!

Yes that blue is amazing on him, nearly as nice as his eyes, and the golden brown of his hair takes your breath away.  Is it my imagination or is it shinier and more glistening then usual.  The colour is fab, his natural colour I think...darn him, people pay good money for a colour like that and here he is naturally blessed.

Kareena..yes, hello sailor indeed.  I read somewhere that he has a sailing licence..I think it was when he lived in the US..so he is at home on the water.

I hope the weather keeps well and the water is nice and calm for them all, or it could get a little embarrassing

There is no such thing as a "sailing license" in the US and I'm fairly the sure that holds true for Canadian waters as well. I think what Alexei did when he was in the US was take a safe boating course. I remember reading that he had a "license," too, but his definition of the word and whatever documentation he has are likely two entirely different meanings. There is also the possibility that he studied for and took a US Coast Guard license for small commercial vessels, commonly know as a 6-pack license. This the the document required to operate any small commecial vessel in US waters...everything from a day sailing business to a fishing-boat-for-hire business. This latter one require a ton and a half of study to prepare to take the thing, LOL. The test is a real bear!

Mary at least you know the lingo...I'd be a babbling idiot without any insider knowledge.  I noticed in all the pictures the participants had the nice blue jackets on but no life-jackets.  I don't think safety regulations are very strict in Russia or perhaps they just took them off for the photo's!

Lina...Yes, I know the lingo and the procedures they describe. My late husband and I had our own 8 meter cruising sailboat for nearly 22 years, and we sailed both inland and protected ocean waterways. We did bare boat chartering on many occasions in the protected waters of the Chesapeake Bay, especially around St. Michael's, Maryland.

The fact that those pics don't show Alexei, or anybody else, wearing life jackets is of a major concern to me, lol, and as a current member of the United States Sail and Power Squadrons boating education is a big issue with me. I don't think the Russian government is too strict about any boating or safety concerins. In all those photos the waters look quite cold and if Alexei or any of the other sailors were to fall overboard they would be in serious trouble almost immediately, regardless of how well they could swim. There are various types of life vests that are thin enough to be comfortablely worn under their sailing jackets. If one of them fell overboard the life vest would keep them afloat until the closest boat could reach them and haul them on board. Without that vest it is extremely difficult to tread water long enough in 50 degree water to stay afloat and stay concious until rescure. After roughly 15 minutes a person will lose conciousness in 50 degree water as the body shuts down circulation to the extremities to preserve the core tissues and organs. Much longer than that and you're in danger of being dead.

Sailing is tons of fun but it can also be extremely dangerous. If a gust of wind should catch the sail in just the wrong way (due to either an error from the helmsman's judgment or his/her inattention or an unexpected weather phenomena), the situation can become critical in an instant with the helm in the hands of an inexperienced sailor. Unexpected gusts of wind have been known to knock the boom (a metal or wooden spar to which the bottom of the mainsail is attached, holding it out taught from the mast to catch and direct the wind to propell the boat) causing it to swing to the other side of the boat and knocking everyone in the cockpit into the water. This occurs frequently on boats under 5 meters in length but it can still happen to mid-sized boats of 6 to 10 meters. It is sooo not fun, LOL. I never went totally overboard the one time it happened to me on our boat, although it wiped my hubby off the deck and into the water, LOL. I clung to the boom and rode it out over the water, LOL, and was able to crawl back along the boom and back to the deck. From there I grabbed the wheel, started the engine and motored back to pick up my hubby, bobbing in the water with his life jacket on. He was a good 1500 feet behind me when I got the boat turned around and under control.

Sounds like a scarey experience Mary! I too am a bit concerned about the lifejacket thing,no matter how good a swimmer you are,it is always good to be wearing a lifejacket  in those types of enviroments, especially as you already mentioned the bodies reaction to cold water.

"Lina...Yes, I know the lingo and the procedures they describe."--ummm, Mary, I think you are answering Sharon's post there, rather than mine. Wink  I agree with you about the importance of life vests, of course; I always wore one when I sailed, even though I was a very confident swimmer.  I figured these photos were all taken on land, and that they would don the life vests (I always think of them as "life jackets" for some reason) only when they were about to sail.  I envy you all the sailing you have done; I only got to do one season of it, in a very fast boat; I handled the jib.  One time my sailing partner insisted that we go out in spite of storm predictions, and I was foolish enough to give in to them lol.  The boat capsized, but I had on my life vest, and the very top of my head never even got wet, because the vest worked so well; it made me into a human cork!  lololololol.  I'll never forget the marvelous stillness when the boat leaned, cutting through the water.  It was like nothing else I have ever experienced, that sense of quiet and absolute peace, away from all cares.  Even the day of the storm was fun lol.

.....just got back from the lake and a few days of sailing! (I mostly sat and enjoyed while everyone else ran around....I have a smaller walking cast on - no more itching!) The wind conditions were perfect yesterday.  Only problem - no internet access except for my blackberry.....It was really nice to come home and read all of your terrific posts on sailing!

but here are some pictures of Alexei at the Moscow Festival of the Yachts.....Alexei looks quite at home on the water....I'd go sailing with him anyday! or even....

Thanks a lot for the second group of photos, Karenna Laughing.  The first group does not open for me, for some reason, but the second group is lovely.  I think the sailing is just what Alexei needed after a long touring season.  Maybe I am just imagining things, but he seems to look warmly relaxed in these new photos, and that makes me feel good.

It's great to hear that you are walking again and not itching any more!  My life seems to be levelling off a bit, but it's too soon to tell, really.  Meanwhile, I have been drowning my sorrows in soccer and today Wimbledon has begun, so I'll never get caught up around here, but the soccer on Saturday got my adrenalin pumping again in a positive way, and I'm smiling more again.  The only trouble is, I seem to be forming an addiction to soccer, and if the tennis and soccer broadcasts conflict, I am apt to develop a split personality lolololol.  But that would not be all bad.....

That's the best way to spend the day Lina!  I used to think that life completely stopped after skating season (a little part of me still feels that way) but soccer and tennis definitely can fill the void.  Summer isn't so bad after all! LOL!
