In the other forum we used to have a part dedicated to fotball...but ...i think we can discuss about fotball here:P Or about ski-jumping

Today was the draw for EC 2008(fotball,for the ones who don't know :P

And our national team is in the most difficult group, with Netherland,Italy and France. For the ones who don't know my country is Romania :)

Kaka won today Ballon d'Or awrad! I am very happy for him.

And because i mentioned about ski-jumping i can say that it was the first round of the World Cup. this round(Kuusamo-Finland) was wonn by Norway(at teams) and Thomas Morgenstern (individual). It was a very good competion.

Maria Sharpova won the Australian Open title with no losses throughout the tournament.  It's nice to see her raising the cup!  Last year she was dealing with a shoulder injury that prevented her from attaining her full potential - nice turnaround this year!

I'd have to go:

1. Wimbledon: the first, the best
2. French (Roland Garros): Raffa's bulging muscles suit the red clay!
3. US Open: the most gladiatorial - I think its the height of the stadium court and the noise
4. Australian: the baking sun of Melbourne at a time when its wet and dark in UK always makes me a little jealous!

I have to admit, tennis is my first love, sports-wise

Hello!
Chelsea beat Liverpool :( so they are in the final and they will play against Manchester United...if the national team it isn't qualified at Euro's  England have two teams on the UCL final...but how many english players they have in these teams..maybe that's why they aren't at EC.
Hope Manchester will win the title :)

Meanwhile Real Madrid won their 31st title in Primera Division and they beat last night Barcelona

Steaua Bucharest lost the title with a one points difference from CFR Cluj - i don't know why i wrote this because you don't know the teams-speacially CFR :P  And on 7 may 1986 Steaua won the Champions Cup beating Brcelona after penaltys. And yesterday on 7 may 2008 we lost the national title...so sadly :(

Three-time defending champ Rafael Nadal beaten in Rome Masters 2nd round :(

I'm gutted about Liverpool - the own goal proved vital..now that's gotta hurtYell

Rafa remains King of Clay.

I was pleased to see Safina win.  I didn't see the Henin match but the back-up win she then had against Serena Williams was good.  I hope its the start of a push up the rankings for her.  She has the same temper as her brother at times so  not sure she'll aways be able to hold it together but it makes for great, if flustrating, entertainment.

Zenit St. Petersburg brings to Russia the second european trophy. They won UEFA Cup final against Glasgow Rangers. CSKA Moscow won the same trophy in 2005.

Justine Henin said good bye to the professional tennis life.
THANK YOU CHAMPION!

20 years of passion, ten years on tour, ten years of victories, ten years of emotions and even a few defeats. Thousands upon thousands of supporters, hundreds upon hundreds of chills, and countless tears of joy...

Justine world #1, the great champion, is retiring today as Champion - forever at the top of her art. Your fire, your power, this total comittement to your desire, your breathtaking tennis, and all in the name of your supporters.

Thank you Justine, and may the spirited wind of Champion carry you in all of your new adventures!

BRUSSELS, May 14 (Reuters) - Following is a selection of tributes to Belgian world number one Justine Henin, who retired from tennis on Wednesday.

LARRY SCOTT (WTA Tour chief executive): “Justine Henin will be remembered as one of the all-time great champions in women’s tennis, and a woman who made up for her lack of size with a will to win and fighting spirit that was second to none,” he said in a statement.

“It is rare that an athlete leaves at the very top of her game in this day and age but Justine has always played by her own rules.

“History will remember Justine for not only her seven grand slam titles and three years finishing as the WTA Tour’s world number one but for one of the most graceful backhands the sport has ever seen and an ability to overcome any and all obstacles placed in her way on the tennis court and off.”

FRANCESCO RICCI BITTI (ITF president): “Justine Henin has been an outstanding athlete of her generation, and had a grace and style on court that distinguished her from other players. She has always been one of my favourite players to watch.

“Her victory at the 2004 Athens Olympics was Belgium’s only gold medal at the Games and we are sorry that she won’t be able to defend her title in Beijing. She has made a huge contribution to the sport.”

ROGER FEDERER (Switzerland), men’s world number one: “It’s obviously a shock for the tennis world. It’s a particular surprise before Roland Garros and Wimbledon, which she’s never won.

“It’s quite surprising and unfortunate that she’s out of the game but she will have her reasons.

“She is a special player because she can play on any surface and it’s remarkable that she’s won so many tournaments because she is small and the tall players coming in now have an advantage.

“I couldn’t imagine deciding out of the blue to retire, especially if I was number one. I would prefer to take a year off if it was all getting too much for me, rather than saying straight out that I’m not going to go on.”

RAFAEL NADAL (Spain): "Surely, surprised. But she knows more than anyone how she feels. We have to respect her decision and support her, I think. It's an important loss for the sport and for tennis because she was No. 1, one of the best players of the world in the last years. So, disappointing for us."

VENUS WILLIAMS (U.S.): “She was a great opponent. She always challenged herself to play her best tennis, no matter what the circumstances. A real fighter.”

SERENA WILLIAMS (U.S.): “She was a great champion and she gave me a world of trouble, so I hope the best for her. Gosh, what can you say about such a great champion? I don’t think we have enough time.”

JELENA JANKOVIC (Serbia): “I was very surprised by her retirement because she’s doing very well and she’s still young. She’s great for the game.

“It can sometimes be very difficult, many years playing and travelling around the world. Being there, being at the top, can be very difficult. We will miss her.”

ANA IVANOVIC (Serbia): “(Tennis loses) another champion, a great player who brought a lot to the women’s game. She had a different game to any other woman on the tour. I’m sorry to hear this, but it's her own feeling and her own decision. You know, if she's happy with her career and what she achieved, I mean, she won a Grand Slam. She was No. 1 for so long, so she had very successful career. ”

AMELIE MAURESMO (FRA): " I was surprised like everybody. She never expressed some kind of burn out before that. What I'll remember first about her, will be her fighting spirit and her will to not accept the defeat. She proved herself, with her height and her style, that a player can win all these tournaments without serving at 200km/h.It's very rare on the tour actrually. She was an importanty opponent for me personnally.I won my two slams against her in 2006.She was someone special in my career.I didn't think that she would retire before me, that's for sure. It'll be strange not to see her on tour anymore. But it doesn't give me the idea of retiring now.I have still the will to play"

MARIA SHARAPOVA (Russia): '' She's 25 years old and has achieved so much in her career and has had incredible success on the court.
If I'm 25 and I won I don't know how many Grand Slams she's won, seven or something, I'd call it quits as well.
You know, I wouldn't be disappointed leaving the sport, because obviously there's a lot more to life than tennis. She's had a very long career, and you never know, maybe one day she'll be back.
She's done incredible things for the sport. She's shown that without being the strongest or the tallest girl on the tour she's been able to win so many matches in so many tournaments and Grand Slams. She's an inspiration to many young girls coming up. There are so many things in life, and I'm sure she wants to explore them as well. I definitely don't blame her for retiring."

BILLIE JEAN KING (U.S): “Pound for pound Justine is the best player of her generation. I trust she has not come to this decision quickly or easily and I wish her the very best. Justine is an extraordinary player, a special person and a true champion in both tennis and in life.”

CARLOS RODRIGUEZ (Henin’s coach): “Technically and tactically she has it all. But I think she will be remembered for the way in which she won and lost and the way she never gave up no matter what was going on in her life.

“She never craved fame and money. All she wanted to do was play and win.”
The French Open started on Sunday.  Even though I think Wimbledon is the pinnacle of tennis Roland Garros does have that French flair and the red clay brings a totally different feel to the play compared to grass or hard courts.

Unfortuantely I was just about to sit down to watch that wonderful beefcake Nadal when the rains came down.  I was looking forward to my appertiser before dinner!

If you want to keep up with the scores go to the offical website:

this is the link for the English language version.

That was an excellent article whisper!  Thank you for preparing and posting this. I didn't know that Justin Henin was only 25 - but one must make choices at any age as to what their future will be.  It was interesting to read the comments from other tennis players including those who have retired many years ago. Also, I watched the final game with Zenit on the soccer channel on Sunday. Even though it was a rerun and I knew the outcome it was great to see the St. Petersbourg team play.  Zenit is quite the team!

Thanks again whisper!

Rafa Nadal has just beaten Djokovic in the final of the Artois championships at Queen's Club, London.  He also beat Andy Roddick in the semi's.  2 close sets.  Federer has also won but at Halle were the field is not as strong.

The trophy at Queen's is massive and the poor puppy didn't look like he had the energy left to hold it up.  He is now going back to Majorca for a bit of a rest and some fishing!

All in all it makes for an interesting build up to Wimbledon, and with the women's field so open I wouldn't like to put a bet on the eventual winners.
